Are You Eligible to Vote for Catholic School Trustees in the 2022 Municipal Elections?

Municipal Election Day is Monday, October 24, 2022.

Make sure your school support designation is “English Separate” (Catholic). It’s a powerful message in support of Waterloo Region’s Catholic schools & Catholic education.

Many people assume they are registered Catholic school supporters when, in fact, they are not.

CLICK HERE TO BE SURE —– https://www.voterlookup.ca/

Only Roman Catholic school supporters may vote for Catholic School Trustees.

All Catholics are eligible to support Catholic education – not just those with children in school!

You don’t have to have children in school to direct your school support to Catholic education. In Waterloo Region there are more people who DO NOT have children in school than DO have children in school. Your support is vital to the continuation of our Catholic education system. It is an investment in our future — and all Catholic ratepayers are partners with Catholic educators in this investment.

Have you moved?

Even if you have been a Catholic school supporter in the past, the designation DOES NOT follow you when you relocate. You are automatically designated a public school board supporter.

Every time you move, it is essential that you re-declare yourself as a Catholic school supporter.

  • Check the assessment section of your Tax Bill or Property Assessment Notice
  • Check your Voter Information Card received during a municipal election year.

What to do if you are NOT registered as a Catholic school supporter, but want to designate your support to Catholic Education:

If you are NOT registered as a Catholic school supporter — but want to designate your support to Catholic Education — you need to fill out the Application for Direction of School Support.

When a Roman Catholic and a Non-Catholic are jointly responsible for the payment of property taxes — either directly through ownership or indirectly through the payment of rent — a Catholic School Support Lease is required. This is simply a technical tool designed to give the Roman Catholic the sole right to determine the school support of her or his residence.

Please visit this website for the forms and more information:

https://www.wcdsb.ca/our-schools/register-for-school/support-catholic-education/

When you have updated your forms, you have two options:

  • Return the forms to your child’s school.
  • If you do not have children attending school, drop your forms at your nearest WCDSB school – or drop them at (or mail them to) the WCDSB head office: 35 Weber St., W., Kitchener, ON, N2G 4G2.

At the Polling Station on Election Day:

  • Verify that you are registered as a separate school supporter. If your support status is incorrect, ask for an ‘Application to Amend Voters’ List’. This form may be completed and submitted at the polling station.
  • Ensure the ballot you are given is a separate school ballot.

If you have any questions, please contact the Waterloo Catholic District School Board at 519-578-3660 Ext. 2355.

WCDSB Schools Raise $23,550 for Ukrainian Relief Efforts

In early March, Waterloo Region’s Catholic schools — standing in solidarity with the people of Ukraine — began a campaign to raise funds to assist humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine.

While a number of schools sent funds directly to the Canadian Red Cross — and a number of schools encouraged families to donate privately via the Canadian Red Cross — a total of 28 WCDSB secondary and elementary schools centrally raised a total of $23,552!

The students and staff at Our Lady of Grace CES (OLOG) in Kitchener were the top elementary school fundraisers, raising $1,907.

The students and staff at St. Benedict CSS in Cambridge were the top secondary school fundraisers, raising $3,000.

On May 10, 2022, Director of Education Loretta Notten joined OLOG Principal Jeff Dinner and students to celebrate the school’s generosity.

Families and individuals in the community who still wish to donate privately are encouraged to do so via the Canadian Red Cross website at:

https://www.redcross.ca/

We continue to pray for peace and healing in Ukraine — and all other places on Earth, where cruelty and war persist.

WCDSB Announces Chair’s Award, Community Partner Award and Distinguished Graduate Award Recipients

Each year, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board proudly announces the recipients of three major awards: Chair’s Award, Community Partner Award and Distinguished Graduate Award.

This year’s recipients of those respective awards are Jamie Metcalf (Child & Youth Care Worker), the Mental Health and Addiction Nurse (MHAN) Program, and Region of Waterloo Councillor Tom Galloway.

The Chair’s Award and Community Partner Award will be presented on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at the annual WCDSB Staff Recognition evening. Tom Galloway will receive the Distinguished Graduate Award at the Resurrection CSS graduation ceremony, per the tradition of the award.

Chair’s Award:

Presented to a person or persons in the school system who has contributed significantly to Catholic Education. It is given annually in recognition of outstanding contributions made to the Catholic school system serving the students, staff, and greater community of Waterloo Region or to the betterment of Catholic Education in Ontario in general.

Jamie Metcalf is a Child & Youth Care Worker (CYCW) at St. Don Bosco CSS. Like so many WCDSB support workers, Jamie exemplifies the notion of a Christian educator who is student focused – making a big difference in the lives of students in quiet and humble ways. She was nominated by a wide breadth of individuals, all who celebrated her many gifts and the selfless actions which have distinguished her service throughout her career.

Community Partner Award:

Presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions made by a community partner or agency to the Catholic school system serving the students, staff, and greater community of Waterloo Region.

The Mental Health and Addictions Nurse (MHAN) Program is the 2021-22 recipient. Mental Health and Addictions Nurses (MHAN) focus on helping students with mental health or addiction issues to thrive at school, remain in school or successfully transition back to school. The nurses collaborate with school boards, teachers, and community-based organizations to support students in their early struggles with mental health and addictions.

For more information about Mental Health and Addictions Nurses (MHAN), please CLICK HERE

Distinguished Graduate Award:

Presented to a graduate of more than 10 years from our school system who has demonstrated outstanding examples of the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations. Awarded at the graduation exercises of the recipient’s Secondary School or other appropriate public venue.

As a proud graduate of both St Anne CES in Kitchener and St Jerome’s High School — and as a parent who has sent all five of his children to WCDSB schools – Region of Waterloo Councillor Tom Galloway’s long record of distinguished public service includes serving as Vice Chair of the WCDSB, as a member of Kitchener City Council and, since 1994, as a member of Region of Waterloo Council, where he played a key role in bringing the Ion rail transit system to reality. He is also well-known for his 50-plus years as official timekeeper at Kitchener Rangers home games.
