Full Day Early Learning Program

Background

In November 2007 Premier Dalton McGuinty appointed Dr. Charles Pascal as Special Advisor on Early Learning.  Dr Pascal was asked to recommend the best way to implement full-day learning for 4- and 5-year-olds.  On June 15, 2009 Dr Pascal’s report, With Our Best Future in Mind – Implementing Early Learning in Ontario, was released.  One of the recommendations of the report was that school boards offer full-day every day early learning programs for 4- and 5-year-olds.

About the Program

Early Learning Kindergarten Teams made up of a certified teacher and a registered early childhood educator will provide our youngest learners with opportunities to learn in faith-based classrooms through instruction, play, inquiry and discovery using a new program document entitled The Full-Day Early Learning – Kindergarten Program.
The program is designed to enhance children’s cognitive, physical, social, spiritual and emotional development.
Children will develop their capacity in language, mathematics, science and technology, physical activity, and the arts.
The Ministry of Education has also developed a Parent Guide to help parents understand full-day kindergarten and answer questions about how it works and how it will help children.
If you have questions about Early Learning ask your school principal for information, visit the government web-site at ontario.ca/earlylearning or contact the WCDSB Early Learning Program Department at 519.578.3660, ext. 2277.
