The school year at John Sweeney Catholic School started with a simple idea: students do their best when the adults around them are connected.

Families recently gathered at the school for a Parent Connection morning. The event brought parents together with staff, parish representatives and one another, all with the same goal of helping students get off to a strong start.

Father Aleks and Father Rajesh began the day leading our staff in prayer. Principal Tanya Hunter then welcomed everyone and explained that the event was designed to help parents meet not only school staff but also the families whose children share their child’s classroom or grade.

“At John Sweeney, we believe that strong connections between family, school and parish create the foundation for student success,” Hunter said. “Through Parent Connection events, we are building community, strengthening relationships and supporting families as partners in their children’s learning and faith journeys.”

Parents talked about the social, emotional and life skills that matter most at different stages of child development. They also left with practical ideas and strategies they can use at home to support their children’s learning and growth.
Representatives from the parish took part in the morning. Their presence reflected the partnership between home, school and church that is at the heart of Catholic education.

The Parent Connection event is just the beginning. Staff plan to offer more opportunities throughout the year for families to connect, build relationships and grow the sense of community that makes John Sweeney special.
