Bring Your Own Mobile Device

Conditions of bringing personal devices to WCDSB

  • Personal Device Use: Students are permitted to bring personal computer devices to use in the classroom or school. The use of applications and programs on these devices for classroom activities is at the discretion of the school staff and must support student learning.
  • Technical Support: The Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) does not provide technical support for the maintenance of software or hardware on personal devices. If technical assistance is needed, students are responsible for contacting the vendor or a local computer repair service directly.
  • Liability: The WCDSB is not liable for any issues that may arise from using personal devices on school property, including device or software failures.
  • Security and Safety: The WCDSB is not responsible for any personal devices that are lost, damaged, or stolen while on school property or during school-sponsored events. Students must take reasonable precautions to protect their devices and prevent the introduction of viruses or malware to the WCDSB network.
  • Permission for Use: Personal mobile devices may only be used in the classroom with the express permission of the educator, in accordance with APC018: Code of Conduct.
  • Responsibility: Students are responsible for their personal devices, their usage, and any consequences of not adhering to the school board’s policies regarding their use.
  • Monitoring: Educators will monitor the use of personal mobile devices to ensure compliance with school policies and to support a focused learning environment.

Chromebooks (Important Setup Information)

WCDSB advises that you do not use the student’s WCDSB login to register a personally purchased Chromebook. Rather, use a personal account to activate your Chromebook for the first time. If a WCDSB account is used to activate a new Chromebook, the device becomes affiliated with our managed IT environment and certain user activities such as browsing history may become visible to WCDSB IT staff. Devices registered and activated in this way may also be prevented from being set back to factory defaults, which could affect the ability to re-sell the device later. Once you have registered the Chromebook with a personal account, your child can then use the board account to login.
