Sir Edgar Bauer Overview

Sir Edgar Bauer Catholic Elementary School opened in 1970. “SEB”, as it has been commonly referred to over the years, was the first Catholic school in the Region to be named after a layperson. Edgar Bauer, a successful local businessman, was a very active member in St. Louis Catholic Church Parish, the community, and in local politics. For his lifelong service to the Church, Mr. Bauer was knighted by the Pope to the order of Knight Commander of St. Sylvester.
In the late 1980’s, the student population was over 600. An extensive addition, including a new office area, full double gym, kindergarten yard and 12 new classrooms were completed in 1996.

Sir Edgar Bauer is part of the St. Michael Parish community. Under the guidance of Fr. Dave Walter and Mr. Charlie VanAlphen, school parish liaison, our students have many opportunities to grow as faithful disciples of the Risen Lord. Sir Edgar Bauer has partnered with St. Michael’s on several initiatives. For five years, classes have donated baby and mother wish list items at Christmas time to the mothers and babies at Marillac Place. Each year a small group of students deliver the gifts to Marillac Place and learn more about the programs available to the young mothers. For three years we have held a Mission Day, with proceeds going to the Harambee Africa Project. Currently we sponsor six children/youth. We have had visits from Sr. Rose and Sr. Gloria over the past several years, and they provide us with updates on our children. Our first Mission Day was the result of an enthusiastic group of grade five students, currently in grade eight, who proposed the idea of a Mission Day. With tremendous parental and staff support, we continue to hold a yearly Mission Day, which touches on many of the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations: a responsible citizen, a caring family member, a collaborative contributor, a reflective, creative and holistic thinker, a self-directed responsible lifelong learner, a discerning believer and an effective communicator.

Currently, 348 children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 attend Sir Edgar Bauer. It is the feeder school for French Immersion in Waterloo, and currently has a grade one and two class. Intensive French is offered to students in grade five. Sir Edgar Bauer has a very active Catholic School Council which, through fundraising and the formation of subcommittees, is able to support a variety of learning opportunities for our students.

We have partnerships with Carizon and Better Beginnings Waterloo, who provide service and programs for students and families in our school. Together: school, parents, parish, partnerships and community, we help each child reach their full potential.
