Level UP! Career Fair in the Skilled Trades for Parents and Guardians

Introducing Level Up!, the Ontario-wide, multi-day career fair events that bring together the best in skilled trades professionals. Your child might not realize a career in the skilled trades is a great option for them to consider. This is your chance to help them explore the possibilities. Learn why the skilled trades are an ideal career for young people who are hard-working, hands-on, passionate, and committed to positively impacting society.

On the first day of each fair, parents and guardians are encouraged to attend an intimate evening event, which will include insights from and discussion with skilled trades and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) representatives, as well as the opportunity to experience hands-on exhibits for yourselves. Enjoy interactive, hands-on experiences. Learn what’s next in the skilled trades. Speak to industry organizations, post-secondary institutions, businesses, associations and more.

WHAT: Parents and guardians are invited to learn more about what their children experience at the career fairs and speak directly with experts and industry representatives.

TIMES:  6:30-8:30 PM. A panel discussion and Q&A will take place from 6:45-7:30 PM, and then again from 7:45-8:30 PM.

DATES:

WHY: Understand what career paths may be available to your child and answer any questions you might have about a future in the skilled trades.

HOW: These evening events are open houses, so no pre-registration is required.

Evening events are directed to parents and guardians at places close to the Waterloo region in London, Mississauga and Hamilton. Choose one!

Explore Your Future: Careers in Skilled Trades

Skilled trades are a great option for all students to seriously consider. There’s a high and growing demand for people to fill good paying, satisfying careers in the skilled trades. Skilled tradespeople are highly trained professionals who get to solve new problems every day, work as part of a team and build, fix and design things we need and use every day. Even better, you can earn as you learn instead of accumulating debt.

This FREE event is a great opportunity to hear directly from local people working in the skilled trades about what they do and how they got there, including:

Build a Dream – Career Discovery Expo

On behalf of Build a Dream and WCDSB, we invite you to attend our FREE Kitchener-Waterloo Career Discovery Expo on the evening of Wednesday, November 30th at the Bingemans.

We will be highlighting opportunities in several careers to better assist young women in high school in making career choices. As a community, we recognize the critical role parents play in the development and education of their children, which is why we are providing this opportunity for parents to attend with their daughters and learn more about careers in the growing sectors.

Our Career Discovery Expo events feature:

  • A main stage with theatre seating hosting impactful speakers and panel discussions
  • Exhibitor Booths that showcase career opportunities with industry partners & Build a Dream’s corporate sponsors
  • Free swag and food

Real World Work Experiences in High School

Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom

Having real world work experiences is a great way for youth to make decisions to inform their academic goals and career plans. As they makes plans to navigate their way through high school, youth and their families should know about a couple of programs that provide this opportunity while also developing many transferable skills.

In this session, our partners at Waterloo Region’s English school boards will share a brief overview of the Specialist High Skills Major program (https://www.bepwr.ca/blog/specialist-high-skills-major-s) and Co-op Education (https://www.bepwr.ca/blog/cooperative-education). They will give a general idea about each program and why to consider it as part of your high school education.

Another great option covered in detail in an earlier session is the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) (https://www.bepwr.ca/blog/oyap) which is available on our Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh1D76qh45zmEDMJTu8E54w) .

This session will be of special interest to students in grades 7 – 10.

The Skilled Trades & Tech – UMOJA Series

 

This highly anticipated virtual conference is comprised of three sessions (Elementary, High School and Parent/Guardian) and focuses on promoting careers in the Skilled Trades and Technologies industries for Black students and their families.  It includes an information packed Skills Ontario presentation and students will also have the opportunity to hear from featured speakers in the trades/technologies industries from the Black community.  Following the conference, students will receive a comprehensive digital package that summarizes the conference content, assists with navigating post-secondary pathways and assists with identifying and accessing programs and resources.

The Skilled Trades & Tech – UMOJA Series learning objectives are:

  • What is a Skilled Trade and Technologies Career?
  • Post-secondary pathways, programs and resources
  • How to recognize and access programs and resources to succeed
  • The Black experience in pursuing success and fulfillment in trades and technologies
  • How to overcome barriers and challenges
