Overview of Indigenous Education Council

As outlined in the Ontario First Nations, Métis and Inuit Policy Framework (2014) as developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education, each school board in Ontario is to have a Indigenous Education Committee (IEC). This committee is to be comprised of Indigenous parents, community members, educators, administrators and those who identify as allies.

  • Assist in identifying First Nations, Metis and Inuit community needs;
  • Seek guidance, input and wisdom from Indigenous leaders and community members on matters related to Indigenous education, initiatives, cultures and traditions;
  • Offer input on the annual First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Board Action Plan.

IEC’s primary goal is to provide the WCDSB with direction regarding the implementation of the Indigenous education policy: Ontario First Nation, Metis and Inuit Education Policy Framework. Through this policy framework, the common goal is that all students in Ontario will have the knowledge and appreciation of contemporary and traditional First Nation, Métis and Inuit traditions, cultures and perspectives.

Within this policy framework, key strategies include:

  • Increase the capacity of WCDSB to respond to the learning and cultural needs of Indigenous students;
  • Improve the spiritual, emotional, physical and mental well being of all of our Indigenous students
  • Remove systemic barriers to enhance student learning and achievement amongst Indigenous students;
  • Provide curriculum for all students related to contemporary and traditional Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives;
  • Raise awareness of updated Indigenous curriculum and cultural opportunities amongst all families, board staff, school staff, and elected Trustees; and
  • Facilitate increased partnerships with Indigenous families, communities, and organizations in working to support student success.

Currently, WCDSB is inviting Indigenous community members to join our IEC! Members will be asked to attend council meetings and advocate for increased Indigenous engagement and local awareness.
