St. Gabriel Overview

St. Gabriel Catholic School is one of the newest members of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. The school officially opened in 2014 within a loving and supportive community. We are located in the Village of Hespeler, Cambridge with 336 dedicated students and 43 talented staff. Together we are committed to making a difference for students, by focusing on student leadership and providing students with rich and engaging instructional programming.

With the wonderful and spiritual guidance of Father Freitas, our school was named in honour of the saint who was the uniting and central figure who brought together St. Elizabeth and Our Lady of Fatima. Therefore, it was most fitting that our school was named St. Gabriel since it brought together students from both St. Elizabeth and Our Lady of Fatima schools to create a new community filled with Love and Hope.

St. Gabriel was the Arch Angel who announced the “good news” to Mary that she would give birth to our Lord Jesus Christ. St. Gabriel’s role as a messenger offers hope and faithfulness. It is our commitment that as members of the St. Gabriel school community, we too are inspired to follow the example of St. Gabriel and live each day as “Messengers of our Catholic faith”, which is reflected in our symbol of “WINGS”.

We are very fortunate to be part of the St. Mary of the Visitation Parish and together, with the guidance of Father Freitas, Sister Bernadette and Bradley Black, our students have experienced many opportunities to continue to grow as messengers of Jesus. We believe that we are ‘Messengers of our Catholic Faith’ and ‘People of Love and Hope’ through our daily actions. Each month we encourage students and staff to live out the virtues of hospitality, generosity, peace-making, charity, humility, love, forgiveness, justice, compassion and faithfulness. We frequently gather as a faith community for liturgical celebrations. As well, classroom lessons, Christian meditation, extended experiences within the community and extra-curricular opportunities focus on helping our students develop the skills and attitudes that support the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations.

At St. Gabriel, our focus is on making R.O.K. Solid Choices by showing RESPECT, keeping Hands OFF and being KIND in our actions and words.

Throughout the school year, we are active messengers who faithfully support many charitable organizations such as the Terry Fox Foundation, Jump Rope for Heart, and John Howard Society. Our student-led H.O.P.E Team has also organized many social justice initiatives such as “Silent for Syria”, “BING-OAT”, “Socktober” and , most recently, a Christmas Card Fundraising Campaign to raise money for our same/shared named school, St. Gabriel in Fort McMurray. We also support initiatives within our Parish community, such as the “Red Stocking Campaign”, and “Hats for Haiti” as well as food drives during the Christmas and Easter season for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

At St. Gabriel CES, our focus on everyone being an integral part of the team helps each person be successful and reach their full potential ACADEMICALLY, SPIRITUALLY, SOCIALLY AND ATHLETICALLY. Our team consists of a mutually supportive relationship between HOME, SCHOOL and PARISH – always keeping God and our faith central to everything that we do. By working together as a TEAM, students will develop the necessary attitudes, values and growth mindset that will support their learning now and in the future.
