Accommodations and Modifications for Multilingual Language Learners

In accordance with Ontario’s Growing Success policy, multilingual language learners (MLLs) may receive accommodations and modifications to support their success in school while they develop English language proficiency. Accommodations are changes in the way instruction and assessment are delivered — such as extended time, simplified language, or the use of visual aids — without altering the curriculum expectations. Modifications, on the other hand, involve changes to the grade-level expectations to better align with a student’s current language and learning needs. These supports are designed to ensure that MLLs can access the curriculum meaningfully and demonstrate their learning in ways that reflect their strengths. If your child is receiving modifications, the ESL/ELD box on the report card will be checked. All teachers share responsibility for supporting English language development and must adapt instruction to meet students’ diverse needs.
