Full-Day Early Learning Program

In November 2007 Premier Dalton McGuinty appointed Dr. Charles Pascal as Special Advisor on Early Learning.  Dr Pascal was asked to recommend the best way to implement full-day learning for 4- and 5-year-olds.  On June 15, 2009 Dr Pascal’s report, With Our Best Future in Mind – Implementing Early Learning in Ontario, was released.  One of the recommendations of the report was that school boards offer full-day every day early learning programs for 4- and 5-year-olds.

Early Learning Kindergarten Teams made up of a certified teacher and a registered early childhood educator will provide our youngest learners with opportunities to learn in faith-based classrooms through instruction, play, inquiry and discovery using a new program document entitled The Full-Day Early Learning – Kindergarten Program.
The program is designed to enhance children’s cognitive, physical, social, spiritual and emotional development.
Children will develop their capacity in language, mathematics, science and technology, physical activity, and the arts.
The Ministry of Education has also developed a Full Day to help parents understand full-day kindergarten and answer questions about how it works and how it will help children.
If you have questions about Early Learning ask your school principal for information, visit the government web-site at ontario.ca/earlylearning or contact the WCDSB Early Learning Program Department at 519.578.3660, ext. 2277.

Following consultation with representatives of the Region of Waterloo Children’s Services Division and the Waterloo Region District School Board, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board developed the following five-year implementation schedule.  The selection for each phase of implementation was based on the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, including available space, impact on existing local child care and local community need.
