General Description of Duties

Reporting to the Supervisor of Transportation, the Transportation Technician is responsible for the implementation of transportation services for all schools in a geographic area of the Region of Waterloo using the current Transportation G.I.S. based software system.

  • Implementing safe and efficient transportation services for all Catholic and Public schools in the geographic area assigned;
  • Verification of student address information;
  • Determination of student transportation eligibility based on the applicable Board Policies;
  • Responding to inquiries relating to school boundaries, transportation eligibility, stop locations and times;
  • Maintenance of current and accurate distance, attendance, hazard boundaries and routes using G.I.S. software system;
  • Designing and planning bus routes;
  • Maintenance of traffic and mapping data with the Transportation Route Planning System;
  • Maintaining current and accurate school and bus route files, maps and statistics;
  • Maintaining and issuing reports to schools and requesting departments;
  • Daily contact with bus operators and school staff on transportation related issues;
  • Other transportation related duties as assigned.


  • Secondary school education plus college level courses in the Transportation or G.I.S., fields with a minimum of one (1) year of related experience or a level of knowledge and understanding equivalent, plus three (3) to five (5) years of related work experience in the student transportation field;
  • Working knowledge of Windows based software applications, including Word and Excel;
  • Understanding of Geographic Information Systems applications and a high degree of analytical ability;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal contacts;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player and make decisions involving the use of ingenuity, initiative, judgment and resourcefulness;
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in an office environment with frequent interruptions, deadlines and high pressure situations, providing a visible public service;
  • Geographic knowledge of the Region of Waterloo and school locations would be an asset.
