Parenting In The 21st Century
What are “Everyday Parenting Ideas” from MVParents?
Parenting in the 21st century can be difficult and stressful for even the most grounded mom and dad. “Everyday Parenting Ideas” comes from the Search Institute (www.search-institute.org) and based on the Forty Developmental Assets. The Search Institute describes the developmental assets as “40 relationships, opportunities, skills, and values that research shows all young people need in their lives in order to thrive and reach their potential.” The assets are divided into eight categories:
External Assets (provided by family, friends, school and community)
- Support
- Empowerment
- Boundaries and Expectations
- Constructive Use of Time
Internal Assets (young people gradually develop within themselves)
- Commitment to Learning
- Positive Values
- Social Competencies
- Positive Identity
The parenting ideas are for a wide range of ages on an even wider range of topics and provide a positive approach to parenting to help youth grow up healthy and avoid high-risk behaviours. More information can be found at the website listed above.
